British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
