Hazbin Hotel's Showrunner Unveils Rosie and Alastor's Backstory Is a Major Season 3 Tease
Devoted viewers of the series at last got a much-anticipated origin story in season 2's fourth episode, called “It's a Deal.” This episode will probably spark extensive conversation and raise numerous inquiries about the nature of one particular demon Overlord who appears significantly stronger than anyone before understood. The new revelations feature a glimpse into the human life of a fan-favorite character before his demise and sentence to Hell.
A Major Tease for Future Seasons
The show's creator shared a secret about “It's a Deal” – it acts as a huge hint for the third season. She also offered further details into the process of designing the mortal forms of her infernal animated characters.
Spoiler alert for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a look back reveals that fan-favorite character Alastor, the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his mortal days. Being aware he was headed to the underworld, he established communication with the realm beyond in advance to obtain a strong position there. The charismatic leader, the charismatic leader Hell’s cannibal community, promised Alastor he would become “the strongest Sinner in Hell” in exchange for his eternal spirit.
This prompts the question: In what way is this character powerful enough to raise Alastor over every other Sinner Demons?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the first stepping stone in a much bigger story that involves a great deal, leading into the third season,” the creator states. “Clearly that is an excellent question: How is she that powerful? The solution could be various factors, but the answer is in season 3. I'm very excited for fans to witness it.”
There’s no telling how long the audience will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have green-lit seasons 3 and 4, but the showrunner often remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and subsequent seasons are undated. Still, she says holding off on those details is a crucial aspect of maintaining the second season's attention in the right places.
“The challenge of any agreement with infernal beings, or stories that have enigmas, is providing people just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that gradually, and allowing that be satisfying,” she comments. “So I'm very excited.”
Questions Answered in Season 3
The showrunner promises that season 3 will tackle the questions fans have been asking, such as why the cannibal leader ordered Alastor to vanish for a seven-year period, which weakened his influence in Hell.
“The entire seven-year span, and the pacts these humans are doing, and everything — it contributes to a larger story,” she reveals.
In the meantime, the origin story episode offers a further look into what the main characters of Sinner Demons looked like as humans, following after viewing another character's Victorian-era human form in episode 2. The creator explains that significant consideration was put into the visual creation of these forms.
“The human versions of the characters carry great significance,” she says. “They range from looking really different from their demon form to looking almost identical. With the first character, the initial design we see, there was some internal discussion internally between going with something that represents the character, as opposed to selecting an option that's historically correct. We opted for making something that just seemed like it was him.”
She says the primary controversy over the mortal look of Pentious was his long hair: “We were like, ‘No one typically had long hair of that style in Victorian-era London.’ But simultaneously, we think the silhouette is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We kind of provided the rationale that he lived in seclusion, so he just let his hair grow out. So there's always a way. As we create the mortal forms of these characters […] it's such a fun thing to investigate and determine. I'm excited for people to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
New episodes of Hazbin Hotel the second season are released on midweek on the streaming service.
