{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track right in his path
The concerning event took place on the third lap when safety workers were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes dashing across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be allowed to just dash across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Official Investigation Underway
F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the events
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was advised that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, marshals were notified and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch officials were canceled and a safety warning flag was shown in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what occurred subsequent to that time"
